UCLA Men's Rugby continues to make history on the national stage, as standout forward Will Sherman was selected No. 1 overall in the 2025 Major League Rugby Draft by Anthem Rugby. Sherman's selection cements UCLA's reputation as one of the premier collegiate rugby programs in the United States, making the Bruins the first-ever college rugby program to produce multiple No. 1 overall draft picks.
Sherman follows in the footsteps of former UCLA star Eric Naposki, who was taken first overall in the 2021 MLR Draft, underscoring the program's ability to consistently develop elite-level talent.
A Collegiate All-American and leader on and off the field, Sherman recently graduated from UCLA after a decorated career that included earning Players Player & Best Forward award for the Bruins as well as representing the USA U23s on their South Africa tour, where he started all three matches and was appointed Vice Captain. Known for his work rate, physicality, and rugby IQ, Sherman's skill set made him a consensus top prospect heading into this year's draft.
"Will's achievement is a testament not just to his incredible ability as a rugby player, but also his discipline, character, and leadership," said UCLA Rugby Head Coach Harry Bennett. "We are tremendously proud of Will, and to see him join Eric as a No. 1 pick is proof of the culture and standard our program continues to build."
For Anthem Rugby, securing Sherman with the top pick provides the expansion club with a dynamic forward capable of making an immediate impact at the professional level. For UCLA, it is another milestone in a season already rich with success — from All-American honors to international representation and now, another No. 1 overall draft selection.
With Sherman stepping onto the professional stage, UCLA Rugby continues to blaze a trail as a program that not only competes at the highest collegiate level but also serves as a direct pipeline to the professional and international ranks.
