Will Sherman's summer of 2025 has been nothing short of extraordinary — the kind of rugby journey that many young players dream of, but few ever experience. Fresh off graduating from UCLA as a Collegiate All-American, Sherman has spent the past few months proving his quality on both hemispheres, making waves with the USA Men's U23s and earning respect in Australia's fiercely competitive Shute Shield.
The summer began with Sherman's selection to the USA Men's U23 squad for their tour of South Africa — a proving ground against some of the most physical and technically gifted young players in the world. Not only did he start in all three matches on tour, but he was also appointed Vice Captain, a testament to his leadership qualities and the trust placed in him by the coaching staff. His consistent presence on the field, paired with his ability to set the tone defensively, cemented his reputation as one of the country's most promising forwards.
As soon as the U23 campaign concluded, Sherman boarded another long-haul flight — this time to Sydney, Australia. There, he joined Randwick Rugby Club for the back half of the Shute Shield season, thanks to a strategic partnership between UCLA, the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and Randwick Rugby Club, spearheaded by Wallaby and Randwick great Simon Poidevin.
In just a short stint at Coogee, Sherman showcased his adaptability and determination, quickly climbing into higher-grade rugby through consistently strong performances. His breakthrough moment came last weekend in 2nd Grade, where he delivered a dominant, Man of the Match performance — racking up an eye-popping 36 tackles to lead all players. It was a defensive masterclass that drew praise from both teammates and coaches, and further solidified his standing as a player on the rise.
"Will's impact at UCLA went far beyond the on field performances," said UCLA Rugby Head Coach Harry Bennett. "Yes, he's an exceptional rugby player with a relentless work rate and physicality, but it's his approach, humility, and consistency in preparation that truly set him apart. He leads by example in everything he does, and that's why he's been able to seamlessly step up on every stage he's been given."
Now, Sherman's name is generating serious buzz ahead of the upcoming MLR Draft. Multiple franchises are reported to be keen on acquiring his services, and most insiders believe he will be a high pick. For Sherman, the decisions ahead are enviable ones: return to Randwick in 2026 to push for a coveted 1st Grade spot, or seize the opportunity to begin his professional career in Major League Rugby.
Whatever path he chooses, Sherman's summer has shown that he is more than ready for the next level — a player whose work rate, leadership, and character have already taken him across continents, and whose ceiling remains sky-high.
