Under the lights at the UCLA IM Rugby Field on Friday night, the Bruins put on an impressive display of depth and development, defeating the USC Trojans 55–10. While the result was one-sided on the scoreboard, the evening's real success came in the opportunity it provided for both programs to build and grow.
For UCLA, this matchup served as a key development fixture in the fall campaign. The Bruins rested 22 regular squad members, allowing a wider roster of 32 players to gain valuable game time. Among them were 18 players making their season debut in blue and gold — a strong sign of the depth and emerging talent within the program. Despite so many new faces, the Bruins played with structure, pace, and confidence, showcasing the effectiveness of their growing player pathway.
Head Coach Harry Bennett praised the team's focus and effort, noting how important these fixtures are for player development and program cohesion. "It was fantastic to see so many players get their first run this season," Bennett said. "These opportunities are what allow us to build depth and continuity as we move forward."
UCLA also extended thanks to the USC Trojans for making the fixture possible. The Trojans, under the leadership of their Director of Rugby, are clearly focused on rebuilding and expanding their program — an effort that deserves recognition. "We have great respect for what USC is doing," Bennett added. "Their renewed energy and commitment to growth are great for rugby in Southern California. We'd love nothing more than to see a strong Trojans program alongside us."
With the 55–10 win, the Bruins continue to gain momentum in their fall schedule — developing talent, building depth, and strengthening Southern California rugby one fixture at a time.
