PREVIEW: UCLA Set for Showdown with Sun Devils

1/26/2018 4:24:00 PM

WESTWOOD — The UCLA Bruins will play host to the Arizona State Sun Devils tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM on the North Athletic Field in the second round of the PAC Conference regular season.

After putting in an 11 try performance against the USC Trojans last weekend, UCLA looks prepared to take on an Arizona State team that is yet to play a PAC Conference match this season.

"We had some nice phases of play, but also some discipline issues in tackling and around the breakdown that need to be better in order to continue our improvement," explained UCLA head coach Scott Stewart when asked about how his team could improve following the USC match.

Looking at UCLA's personnel, the Bruins have lots of talent to showcase across the pitch, especially with the proven abilities of their back line. 2017 All-American fly-half, Cian Barry, was clutch from the tee and boot against SC, slotting six of eight conversions and a drop goal for a 15 point tally. Freshman phenoms, Eric Naposki-Abdalah and Ben Broselle, showed lethal pace on the wings and on the counter-attack, scoring seven of UCLA's tries on the day. Add in the strength of senior center James Francis and agility of sophomore scrum-half Patrick French and the Bruins back line only gets stronger.

"Our ability to attack with width was troublesome for the opposition [last weekend]," remarked Stewart when asked about the quality of his backs.

The Bruins also have plenty of strength to show for in their forwards. The back row trio of Patrick Regan, Henry Brennan, and Jax Carter were strong at the breakdown and on set pieces against the Trojans, but will look to improve upon their first performance against the Sun Devils tomorrow. Junior hooker Christian Bernard showed his scrummaging capabilities alongside Dan Jeremiah and Andrew Alex in the front row, a unit that will face a much stiffer challenge in Arizona State's front three. With Henry Brennan and Yanick Mendes anchoring the scrum, the Bruins have heaps of potential when it comes to their forward pack.

Stewart was optimistic about the synergy of his two units saying, "The back and forwards work off each other so hopefully all of those players will be focused on playing their best."

As for the opposition, the Sun Devils make the trip to Westwood staring down a back-to-back slate of matches over the weekend where they'll take on the Trojans on Sunday after they kick their season off against the Bruins.

"ASU can run and attack as well as any team," Stewart remarked, "so we have to control our possession and play a field possession game."
