Ironbruin Race Analysis[LINK]

This is an analysis of the results from the 2022 Ironbruin Race. Often, race results look bad and do not provide a lot of information. Hopefully, this provides additional information and an interesting way to look at the results. Included are graphs of how bruins preformed over the race as well as a look at how important each leg was to race success.

When correlating leg time with final time, the correlations are as follows from strongest to weakest:

  1. Bike: .91
  2. Run: .79
  3. Swim: .7
  4. t1: .53
  5. t2: .29

When correlating leg time with final place, the correlations are however:

  1. Bike: .84
  2. Run: .8
  3. Swim: .56
  4. t1: .54
  5. t2: .27

When looking at the data it is important to remember that there was likely some errors with t1 and swim timing, and the two times should be combined together to get a more accurate picture(this idea is supported by the disproportionately high correlation of t1 with final outcomes). Additionally, optimal statistical tests were not performed, complaints can be lodged with UCLA course curators who do not require classes in statistics for engineering students. Finally, it was possible for athletes to tie to the second, which may explain why some place graphs look rather strange out of swim and t1.
