UCLA Kung Fu welcomes all people interested in learning about Kung Fu and practicing its many different styles and techniques. We practice a variety of exercises, including, but not limited to forms, applications, sparring, weapons, strikes, footwork, defense, takedowns, joint manipulations, jumps, lifts, and more. 

           Kung Fu is traditional Chinese martial arts. It is the umbrella which encompasses all the different movements and fighting techniques of specific martial arts styles.While it literally translates into the idea of hard work, the term itself relates to the idea of studying, learning, and practice--the idea that through hard work, any skill is achievable.

For me, kung fu is not only self defense, but it is a lifestyle. I believe that kung fu can represent more than the physical fighting. It is working hard to always improve yourself-- cultivating the mind and body at the same time. Whether it's helping to clear your mind, to gain physical strength, to improve flexibility, to improve your health, etc. All these attributes can be applied to your daily life and not just combat.
 
Alan Meng (Computer Science Major, Alumni):
Kung fu is a life style, as we have to develop a mentality that there is always room to improve. There is no end in kung fu training, as there are so many aspects that you can work on. You can train in forms, sparring, stances, meditation and qi gong... and that could only just be one style! If you lose interest in one style, you have so much more you can learn out there.
 
Jay Vongasavarit (Biochemistry Major, 4th Year):
Kung Fu not only has opened my eyes to the possibilities of martial arts, but over time it grew more into an overall vision of my life as well… Each art has their own philosophies and teachings, and these instructions translate to more than the physical movements, they train you to control and predict outcomes with your mind. In Kung Fu, if you want to fight better, or have more beautiful form, you need to practice more. That is life, if you want to succeed in something, you have to put time into it and your results are the direct outcomes of your hard work. I don't like to think of my limits, but rather what I want to achieve… Lastly, I view Kung Fu as a lot of things that we all do everyday. Things that define us, who we are, what we do when others are not around. How to be a good person, how we treat other people, and how we live life. Like Jackie Chan said, "everything is Kung Fu."
 
James Lin (Psychobiology Major, 3rd Year):
Kung fu epitomizes the diversity, practicality, impracticality, style and culture of martial arts. It is creative and ever-changing while keeping hold to its roots. It is more of concept and an umbrella term to describe what you are learning when you take classes or join a school to learn a style. The more you learn about kung fu, the harder it is to effectively define it, because as you approach the frontier of your understanding the horizon grows larger. It is the accumulation of spirituality, knowledge and hard work by millions of martial artists over thousands of years
