UCLA Women's Rugby- About Us

Welcome to the UCLA Women's Rugby Club! We hope this page can answer your questions, but the best way to learn more about our team and rugby is to come practice with us. The Bruin Rangers represent the University of California Los Angeles and compete at the Division I level of USA collegiate rugby.

Our History:

It all began in 1975 when several inspired, athletic UCLA students decided to found a women's rugby club. Following the lead of the national champion UCLA men's rugby club, the young team worked hard and soon earned a berth in the National USA Championships. The Bruins captured third place in their first appearance and earned the respect of the predominantly East Coast participants. Thus began the great tradition of women's rugby at UCLA. By the next few decades, the UCLA Women's rugby team had established itself as one of the predominant clubs in the Southern California Women's Rugby League. Beginning in 2005, a collegiate side of the UCLA Women's Rugby team formed and the club began competing in the collegiate division of the Southern California Women's Rugby Union.

Information for Prospective Players:

We look for girls that have a love for rugby like we do. Go hard or go home! The Bruin Rangers accepts all interested students, of all skill and fitness levels, with or without rugby experience. Any students interested in playing need only come out to practice and join in. No experience necessary. We have lots of people on the squad and everyone gets to play.

Why should I join?

Rugby players are a unique breed and an excellent group of friends. The team is filled with players of all ages, majors, and backgrounds, offering you a diverse team that's not found in every student group. As a rookie, you will be matched up with a returning player - your "vet" - who is dedicated to acting as your "big sister" away from home. She will look out for you, answer your questions, and help make your experience with UCLA Women's Rugby as enjoyable as possible. Additionally, rugby culture is very unique in it's sportsmanship and respect for other ruggers. Rugby is known as a "hooligan's sport played by gentlemen." While both teams play aggressively during the game, once the whistle is blown there are no hard feelings between players, and both teams socialize together before parting ways. This creates a very positive and accepting environment for all ruggers.

What's the time commitment?

The team typically has three 2-hour long practices a week in the evening (starting between 5 and 8pm). Practice times will change every quarter depending on field availability. For Winter 2019 practices will be held Monday 6-8 pm, Wednesday 8-10 pm and Friday 7-9 pm. We encourage fitness sessions at the gym on your own time if you can't make it to practice, and many players choose to work out in pairs or small groups throughout the week. Games and tournaments will occur on weekends, typically a Saturday.

What will I need to play?

New players should obtain two pieces of equipment as soon as possible: cleats and a mouth guard. Soccer cleats are fine, however you may find later that you prefer metal cleats. Team shorts and socks are included in dues. For practices, wear something that is comfortable and which you won't mind getting dirty or otherwise destroyed.

I don't know how to play rugby!

Don't worry, most of us didn't know how to play when we started either. Here's a short video that might help give you a general idea, but don't give up if you're still confused! Ask us questions, we love talking rugby!
