Winter 2026 Reflection

The UCLA Boxing Club closed out a busy winter quarter marked by competition, growth, and resilience, participating in three major tournaments and a series of demanding training preparations.

The quarter began with a milestone event on February 21, when Adonis Renesca and Arturo Luis represented UCLA at USC's inaugural WBC collegiate boxing showcase. In the weeks leading up to the event, the club intensified its training, with fighters and teammates alike preparing for a high-stakes environment.

Fight night delivered on expectations, bringing emotional intensity and fast-paced bouts. Competing at 150 pounds, Renesca demonstrated strong composure in his debut match, though he ultimately fell short on the scorecards. At 125 pounds, Luis secured a decisive victory, showcasing technical precision and control. Following the event, head coach Chris Rizo reflected on the team's effort: "I am so proud of my team—we left it all out there. In the ring, it's easy to see the fight. But the real battle is building unbreakable confidence, believing in yourself when life throws punches, and turning obstacles into comebacks."

Celebrations were brief as the team quickly shifted focus to postseason competition. From March 12–14, Alex Leon represented UCLA at the NCBA Regional Tournament, competing in the 132-pound division. Leon advanced through his opening bout before being eliminated in the following round. His performance, however, earned him eligibility to compete at the national level in North Carolina, signaling his continued upward trajectory as a fighter.

Later in the month, UCLA Boxing sent Daniel, Nick, and Arturo Luis to the USIBA National Tournament, held March 26–28. Luis again delivered a standout performance, winning his opening bout and dominating his second before a shoulder injury forced him to withdraw. Despite the setback, UCLA secured a second-place team finish against a competitive field of collegiate programs. For Daniel and Nick, the tournament marked their first official bouts, providing valuable experience on a national stage.

Across all competitions, the winter quarter reflected a period of momentum for UCLA Boxing—defined not only by wins and losses, but by perseverance, development, and the strengthening of a competitive team culture.
