Bruins Battle Brown in Scholars Cup Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — UCLA Men's Rugby and Brown University served up an entertaining afternoon of collegiate rugby on Saturday, October 10, at the UCLA IM Rugby Field, with the visiting Bears claiming a 32–17 victory in the inaugural FirstPoint USA Scholars Cup.

The matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two universities, bringing together two internationally recognized academic institutions and ambitious rugby programs in a contest that showcased the growing potential of collegiate rugby in the United States.

Played in front of a fantastic sideline atmosphere, the game delivered everything that makes college rugby special. Both sides traded attacking opportunities throughout the afternoon, combining physicality, ambition and an unwavering competitive spirit in a wonderful display of rugby played in its purest form.

The inaugural FirstPoint USA Scholars Cup represents an exciting step forward for the college game, creating opportunities to connect leading academic institutions through rugby while providing a platform to raise the profile of the sport. Initiatives like this help build meaningful rivalries, strengthen relationships between programs and create compelling matchups that attract new audiences, engage alumni and inspire the next generation of student-athletes.

With college rugby continuing to evolve across the country, competitions that bring together universities with shared ambitions can play an important role in raising standards, improving visibility and demonstrating the unique combination of academic excellence and sporting opportunity that American collegiate rugby can offer. Saturday's contest was an encouraging example of what these initiatives can deliver, both on the field and for the broader game.

On the field, the Bruins showed glimpses of their attacking potential, working their way into promising positions and applying pressure inside Brown territory on multiple occasions. However, despite creating opportunities to build scoreboard pressure, UCLA struggled to find the finishing touch at crucial moments.

At the other end, Brown proved more clinical in capitalizing on its opportunities. The visitors' scrum was a defining feature of the contest, providing a platform to apply sustained pressure, dictate field position and turn opportunities into points. That advantage ultimately proved decisive as Brown demonstrated the physicality and composure of a side with genuine ambitions for the season ahead.

For UCLA, the 32–17 result provides both a valuable learning experience and plenty of reasons for optimism as the season continues to unfold.

With just two games under their belt, the Bruins remain a developing group with significant potential still untapped. The opportunities created against a quality opponent highlighted the attacking ability within the squad, while the lessons learned in the set piece and in key moments will provide a clear focus heading into the next phase of the campaign.

UCLA Director of Rugby and Head Coach Harry Bennett remained optimistic about the group's trajectory following the contest.

"We're disappointed with the result, but there's a lot to be excited about with this group. We created opportunities against a very good Brown side, but at this level you have to be able to turn those moments into points. Their scrum gave them a clear advantage, and credit to them for making the most of it. We know there's another level in this squad, and our job now is to keep building, learn from these experiences and continue to grow together. There's a lot of rugby still to come from this team, and I'm excited to see what this group can become."

Brown leaves Westwood looking like an early contender, while the Bruins turn their attention to an important stretch of road fixtures. UCLA moves to 1–1 on the season, with two exciting away challenges providing the opportunity to test themselves, sharpen their execution and continue building momentum.

As the inaugural Scholars Cup sets the foundation for future meetings between these programs, Saturday's contest served as a reminder of the opportunity ahead for college rugby. Strong competition, meaningful rivalries and initiatives that bring universities together will be vital to growing the game and showcasing its value to students, alumni and rugby communities nationwide.

Next Up: UCLA travels to South Bend, Indiana, to face Notre Dame as the Bruins look to respond and continue their development on the road.
