Michigan Week Preview

Men's Rugby

A NEW ERA BEGINS: BRUINS READY FOR NCR PREMIER OPENER

WESTWOOD, Calif. — The wait is over.

After months of anticipation, a major offseason transition, and three demanding weeks of preseason camp, UCLA Men's Rugby is ready to turn the page and get back to what matters most — playing rugby.

This Saturday, the Bruins officially open their Fall 2026 XV's campaign when they welcome the University of Michigan to Westwood for the first-ever meeting between the two programs at UCLA. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. on the Intramural Field, with the matchup serving as UCLA's inaugural National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Premier XVsfixture.

It is a milestone occasion for a program entering a new chapter.

Much has been discussed surrounding UCLA's move to NCR, but with the offseason firmly behind them, the Bruins are ready to let their rugby do the talking. The decision to join NCR was made with a clear focus on creating an ambitious national schedule and providing UCLA student-athletes with an environment built around high-level competition and national championship opportunities.

Now, the conversations, planning and preparation give way to competition.

THREE WEEKS. ONE GOAL.

The Bruins have spent the past three weeks immersed in a grueling preseason camp, laying the foundations for what promises to be one of the most demanding schedules in program history.

The emphasis has been on building cohesion, sharpening standards and preparing a group of returning players and new faces for the intensity of a national XVs campaign.

Saturday will be the first opportunity to put that work under pressure.

And there is no shortage of motivation.

Michigan arrives in Westwood with its own ambitions, making the matchup an intriguing opening test for UCLA. The Wolverines have already played three matches this fall and will make their first trip to UCLA for Saturday's contest.

For the Bruins, however, the focus remains squarely on themselves.

After a long preseason, the energy around the program is building. Players have been waiting for the opportunity to put on the jersey, step across the white line and finally compete for something that counts.

A NEW CHAPTER

The significance of Saturday extends beyond a single result.

UCLA's Fall 2026 season marks the beginning of its NCR Premier XVs campaign and introduces the Bruins to a new national competitive landscape, with marquee matchups against Michigan, Brown, Notre Dame, Dartmouth, Southern Nazarene and Texas A&M on the fall schedule.

But before the national schedule takes the Bruins across the country, it begins right here in Westwood.

Michigan. UCLA. Saturday.

For the first time, these two programs will meet on UCLA soil.

For the first time, the Bruins will compete in an NCR Premier League match.

And after three weeks of preseason camp, there is only one thing left to do.

Play.

The new era starts now.
