A Visiting French Judoka & Winter Updates

Warmly welcome all judokas to learn from the best!

Judo Winter 25
Our last winter quarter practice!
I love judo so much, and training with people, helping people, etc., are very special to me.
Lucie Viroleau

The UCLA Judo Club offers students a unique opportunity to engage in the traditional Japanese martial art of judo. It emphasizes physical fitness, self-defense, and personal development, all with safety as a top priority.

Students benefit from the guidance of Sensei Kenji Osugi, a 7th-degree black belt with extensive experience in judo. Starting his judo journey in 1960, Sensei Osugi has competed nationally and internationally, and currently serves as the Head Instructor of Sawtelle Judo Dojo. His judo expertise has led to many students' success throughout his tenure.

Sensei Dave Gurrero, a 6th-degree black belt, also leads practices and demonstrates techniques with decades of experience. Sensei Dave’s experience in the business world encourages students to grow through judo and as people. These two coaches have led UCLA judo to success for many years.

The club's curriculum encompasses various techniques, from dynamic throwing methods to effective ground control strategies. Practitioners learn to off-balance opponents, execute precise throws, and apply immobilizations, arm locks, and chokeholds. This holistic approach enhances self-defense capabilities and improves physical fitness, flexibility, strength, coordination, and agility.

French Black-belt Judoka in Action

This winter, we warmly welcomed a black belt judoka, an exchange student from France. She was very sweet yet confident in her techniques, and her presence contributed to our larger UCLA judo community. Today, we would like to interview her about her experience for a quarter with UCLA Judo:

What was your first impression of UCLA judo?

I felt like you were a big family and couldn’t wait to train with you all.

What were your favorite moments during the practices this quarter?

It was actually every one of the trainings. I love judo so much, and training with people, helping people, etc., are very special to me.

Did you learn something new? Which techniques or suggestions did you find most helpful from our senseis?

Yes, a lot of things! I learned some flips in Ne Waza, and it was invaluable. I also enjoyed doing uchi mata. The senseis really helped me go further between my partner’s legs so the throw could be more powerful!

Anything else you would like to share with the reader?

Of course! I would like to say that you should go try judo at UCLA. The people are kind and helpful, and you will for sure feel as welcome as I did!

Practices are held twice weekly, every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the Blue Room. Whether you are an undergraduate, graduate, or exchange student, we would like to welcome you to our club. We hope to see you on the mats with us!
