UCLA Men's Rugby is celebrating a major milestone this week as freshman standout Caden Hartley has been selected to the USA Sevens U18 squad for the prestigious Global Youth Sevens Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, taking place December 19–21.
For Hartley, the honor caps a breakout first quarter in Westwood. Arriving from Dana Point, California, and forged in the talent-rich pipeline of the South Orange County Raptors, Caden wasted no time making an impression at UCLA. His blend of speed, physicality, and instinctive rugby IQ made him one of the Bruins' brightest performers during the West Coast Sevens, where he consistently threatened defenses with line breaks, aerial dominance, and high work rate on both sides of the ball.
That form carried straight into the fall 15s season. Whether igniting attacks from the backfield or shutting down opposition runners in open space, Hartley quickly established himself as a dependable and dynamic presence in UCLA's matchday lineups. Coaches and teammates alike have praised his professionalism, competitiveness, and seamless transition to collegiate rugby—qualities that clearly caught the eye of USA Rugby's national age-grade selectors.
The Global Youth Sevens is one of the premier international platforms for emerging rugby talent, featuring elite youth sides from across the world. Hartley's inclusion in the American squad not only reflects his rapid rise but also underscores UCLA's growing impact on the national development pathway.
"This is a massive opportunity for Caden," said Coach Bennettf. "He's earned every bit of it through his preparation, attitude, and performances. We're incredibly proud to see him represent the program on the global stage."
As Hartley departs for New Zealand, the Bruins will be watching closely—and cheering loudly—as one of their own takes on the world's best young sevens talent. For UCLA Rugby and for Caden, this is just the beginning of an exciting journey.
