Ironbruin Post Race:
UCLA hosted several West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference(WCCTC) Teams at our home race, Ironbruin. This race takes place at the premiere vacation destination of Playa Del Rey, mere minutes away from any flight touching down at LAX. This race pitted athletes against a brutal open water swim. The purported 400 yds swim was on race day closer to 700 yds. Combined with swells of 5ft or more, many swimmers in the men's wave could not get out and instead opted to wait for the set waves to subside. Even for those who persevered, athletes who failed to bring a map and compass with them for the bike leg sadly never stood a chance. They faced unregulated LA traffic and treacherous roads. Due in part to the shambolic planning of the bike course, a wrong turn caused the majority of the field to bike an additional 5 km, turning a 20 km jaunt into a 25 km "
adventure." For those who survived, an enjoyable 3 mile run blessed them.
On the men's side,
Edoardo Leone put up an impressive 1st place finish. Owning the fastest bike and run splits, Edo won comfortably in 58:12.4, the only one to finish in under an hour and almost 2 minutes faster than 2nd place.
Marius Genton also snuck into the top 5, holding off a hard charging Rahul Chavan(UCSD), to finish 4th in 1:04:03.3. In the women's race,
Josie Goodson and
Julia Martin both made it into the top 5, finishing 4th and 5th. Further down, UCLA had 7 women finish in the top 20, demonstrating impressive depth.

As for the other mishaps of the day, UCLA Triathlon President
Emiliano Olivo Cauberghs encountered difficulties in his race. Notably absent from the Ironbruin race results, a sinus infection forced Emi to partake in the Run-Bike-Run. During the bike leg, one of his pedals came off. A feat especially impressive considering that pedaling forward only serves to tighten them. This forced him to complete the bike leg with only one foot actually pedaling. Emi would eventually find his pedal(long after the race had concluded), still stuck on the bottom of his shoe.
Camden Yoon also suffered a mechanical during the bike leg of the race. One of his spokes dislodged from his back wheel and wound up between one of the links of his chain. Over time this intrusion caused one of the pulley wheels in his derailleur to shatter. In spite of this, he was still able to finish the race!

As a team the UCLA triathlon team demonstrated perseverance and strength of character. The WCCTC better watch out for this tough group of athletes, headed next to take on Kendra's race at UCSB.
