Although this year was a year of adjustment and growth after a highly competitive 2014-2015 season, the men's Ultimate team still showcased a new crop of very talented players. After losing five seniors intensely affected the team, the new squad took time adjusting on the field. Some of their highlights include a come-from-behind victory against Arizona State at the Santa Barbara Invite, their first tournament of the season. The team came back from a 10-6 deficit and ended up winning 12-11. The team also made the final of the President's Day Qualifier, beating a solid Arizona team 13-11 with their most consistent team effort of the season, later losing a heartbreaker to Chico State 14-12 despite leading for most of the game.
Team leader Thomas Murray explained  that the team did encounter many obstacles, but grew both together and individually. "We were never really able to get a lot of momentum in our season, given that our regular season tournaments were bunched up (3 in 4 weekends) and the squad struggled with some injuries. However, the season ended up being very valuable for many of the nine juniors on the team, as they stepped up into huge roles on the team, bearing a lot more of the pressure. They responded great, and that became more and more clear as the season went on."
The squad will make anotehr transition this season, with 6 players leaving the team, including 4 graduating seniors, 1 graduating masters student, and 1 grad student who has completed five years of eligibility. Among the four graduating is captain Michael Bergman, who was voted overall MVP of the team for his playmaking ability and his commitment to working hard. Captain Josh Adler is another graduating senior, who was voted Offensive MVP. Adler was the center handler for the team's offense, able to break the mark and provide stability to the team. Jackson Valler provided the team with a constant source of positivity and personality that kept the team's spirits up. Captain
Joshua Fankhauser is a graduating masters student, and another valuable piece of the team's offense. He was often the initiating cutter and could always be counted on to come up with a big play in contested situations. Alex Dobner, a PhD student coming from Yale, gave the squad a burst of skilled handling on the defensive line with his lefty length.
Other standout players included Defensive MVP, junior and 2016-2017 captain Alex Julian, who always took the toughest matchup on defense. He also grew throughout the year as an important part of the offense after the defense would generate turnovers. Junior Joe Schatzlein also transformed into an important part of the defense. At 6'3'', his height and length were pivotal. PhD student and stalwart of the team Geoff Iyer was another important part of the team's defensive line. With the most playing experience, he became a leader both on and off the field with his smooth throws and endless motor. In terms of goals for next season, the new captains stress that the team wants to develop a more robust program overall, including their developmental team. Given that the squad will have 9 seniors next year, they want to be more competitive than this year, but not at the expense of building the team for the future.
