UCLA Smaug Prepares for Promising 2025 Season
UCLA Smaug, the Division I ultimate frisbee team from UCLA, is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting 2025 season. After finishing last season ranked in the top 25 nationally, Smaug has its sights set on building upon their success and solidifying their place as one of the top programs in the country.
2024 Season Recap
Smaug had an impressive run last year, earning top finishes at several high-profile tournaments. Highlights of the 2024 season included:
-
1st place at Kendra Fallon (Kfall)
-
4th place at Santa Barbara Invite
-
14th place at Smoky Mountain Invite
-
9th place at President's Day Invite
-
8th place at Northwest Challenge
-
3rd place at SoCal Conferences
-
4th place at Southwest Regionals
Despite a strong showing at Southwest Regionals, the team narrowly missed a bid to Nationals. However, their consistent performance across the season has set a solid foundation for the future.
Roster Turnover and New Talent
Smaug enters the 2025 season with a significantly reshaped roster. Only 11 of last year's 23 players are returning, but the team has bolstered its lineup with a mix of new talent and experienced players:
-
9 players promoted from UCLA Smoke, the developmental team.
-
A standout transfer from UC Irvine.
-
4 promising rookies, eager to make their mark at the D1 level.
Additionally, many of Smaug's returning players bring valuable high-level experience from this past summer. Notably, Calvin Wicks and Marshall Wildmann competed with Los Angeles Condors, while Ian Tsai represented Minneapolis Mallard at Club Nationals. Their exposure to elite adult club play will be instrumental in guiding Smaug's younger players.
Promising Preseason Performance
Smaug has already kicked off the preseason with a statement victory, claiming 1st place at the Kendra Fallon Memorial Tournament for the second consecutive year. This early success mirrors their strong start last season and sets the tone for the upcoming regular season.
Balancing Youth and Experience
While Smaug's roster is younger and less experienced overall, glimpses of bright new talent have already emerged. The team's veterans, many of whom have played at a high level, are poised to lead by example and provide the guidance needed to integrate the newer players. The combination of youthful energy and veteran leadership gives Smaug a dynamic edge as they navigate the challenges of the 2025 season.
Looking Ahead
With their eyes set on another competitive season, Smaug will aim to climb even higher in the rankings and secure a coveted Nationals bid. If their preseason performance and summer training are any indication, UCLA Smaug is ready to make waves in the collegiate ultimate frisbee scene.
Stay tuned for updates as Smaug takes the field this spring, carrying with them the legacy of excellence and determination that has become synonymous with UCLA ultimate frisbee.
