LOS ANGELES – UCLA Bruins Men's Rugby showed resilience and attacking growth Thursday night at UCLA IM Rugby Field, rallying from an early deficit to level the match at halftime before falling 47–24 to BYU.
The final score told a story of momentum swings—one that began with a fast start from the visitors, shifted in UCLA's favor before the break, and ultimately turned on second-half execution.
BYU established control early, capitalizing on field position and early errors to build a 19–0 lead inside the opening 25 minutes. The Cougars played with tempo and clarity, putting immediate pressure on the Bruins and forcing UCLA to respond.
To their credit, the Bruins regrouped with composure. Strategic kicking began to flip territory, and defensive organization tightened. As UCLA settled into rhythm, sustained attacking phases created opportunities and, importantly, points. The Bruins erased the deficit with disciplined, connected rugby—drawing level at 19–19 by halftime in one of their most cohesive stretches of play this season.
The second half, however, highlighted an area that has challenged UCLA in recent weeks. While moments of quality remained, basic errors at key junctures relinquished pressure and handed momentum back to BYU. The Cougars proved clinical, capitalizing on turnovers and converting opportunities with efficiency to create separation on the scoreboard.
Despite the result, there were clear indicators of progress. UCLA demonstrated the ability to string together extended passages of high-level rugby against a quality opponent and showed the resilience to respond after conceding early points.
Postgame, the coaching message reflected that balance—pleased with the growth and the Bruins' capacity to build meaningful phases, but disappointed in moments where simple lapses in intent allowed pressure to slip and opponents back into the contest.
In a season marked by significant injury setbacks and the task of establishing new benchmarks with a reshaped roster, the Bruins continue to build. The commitment within this young group remains strong, and the focus is clear: sharpen the basics, sustain intent for the full 80 minutes, and turn promising stretches into complete performances.
