This past weekend, both D1 and D2 played their last regular-season games at home. For the seniors on both teams, this was the last time they would play a game on IM Field NW as students.
D1 played UC San Diego on Saturday, resulting in a crushing 20-3 win. In typical Senior Day tradition, seniors Sydney Riepl, Zoe Moskowitz, Mary Gallo, and Cici Brooks started. Another tradition continued: each senior put up at least one goal.
Other top scorers include Caroline Underwood (4) and Rowdy Farmer (3). 12 players total scored in Saturday's game, keeping UCLA's broad array of scorers in games going. With half the goals made with assists, D1's attack line was strong across the board. Defensively, the Bruins were solid as well; Goalies Kate Ruiz and Mary Gallo saved 5 shots each, resulting in over a 70% save rate for both players.Â
Of course, Senior Day couldn't be complete without the annual serenade to our beloved seniors, this year written by the D1 freshmen class.
D2 played CSU Northridge the following day on Sunday. Starting seniors included Arisa Waters, Jayden Yamasaki, Sidney Palacios, Sophie Ristorcelli, and Sam Lopez, as well as a full-defense starting line starring Cordelia Bergin, Ameera Ghuman, Emily Clancy, and Ellie Gonzales.
Dominating the draw and quick movements from midfield and the attack line allowed the ball to stay on the Bruin's offensive for the bulk of a game. When the Bruins were on the defensive, high pressure resulted in CTOs allowing for them to get the ball back.
At the conclusion of the game, the seniors were serenaded by the musical words of Elizabeth Gerhardt and Alex Zamansky.
While their regular season is over, the Bruins still have a few more games up their sleeves-- this weekend, both teams will be traveling to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the WWLL Playoffs. Both teams are hungry for wins, and their odds are looking good-- D1 is currently ranked 7th in the nation and D2 is ranked 5th (WCLA D1 & D2 Rankings). For playoffs, D1 has received 1st seed and will be playing their first game Saturday at 9 am versus 8th seed UC Davis. D2 has received the 4th seed, and will be playing 5th seed Stanford on Saturday at 9 am as well.
