SAN DIEGO – UCLA Men's Rowing wrapped up its fall racing this weekend on Mission Bay at the San Diego Fall Classic as the team entered three events.
Head Coach Marcel Stiffey was pleased with the performance of his program and is looking to the spring racing season and what the future holds. The 2023 Coach of the Year shared, "This was our second full team regatta of the fall and I was happy with reaching the podium on 2 of the 3 events that we entered. We've put a lot of effort into growing the size of the team this season and the boathouse has a buzz going on that I haven't felt in my time at UCLA."
The day began with the Men's Open 8 where the UCLA 'A', 'B', and 'C' entries 5th, 6th, and 13th, respectively, out of 17 entries. The Bruins were the top boat of student club crews. The event was won by the Division 1 crew from UCSD.
The buzz and excitement for the future was stoked by the victory of the UCLA 'A' entry in the Men's Novice 8 and the progress of the 'B' and 'C' entries, which finished 4th and 6th. The victorious coxswain was Alex McEttrick, who shared his thoughts on the race. "I'm proud of the 1N's performance at Fall Classic, and I'm looking forward to building more speed during winter quarter."
The Men's Open 4+ UCLA 'A' entry was the top boat of student club crews and finished 3rd behind winner UCSD and Division 1 USD. The Bruins 'B' entry finished 7th and the 'C' entry was 8 seconds behind in 8th place in the 15 boat field.
Next up for UCLA Men's Rowing is more intensive training in preparation for the spring racing which opens March 1, 2025 at the California Challenge Cup in Newport Beach.
