Newport Beach, Calif. - In their first all-squad race of the season, the Bruins returned to Newport Harbor to win every single varsity event at this Saturday's 58th Annual Newport Regatta. Alumni, parents and other supporters packed rival Orange Coast College's boathouse and viewing points along Lido Isle to rally our crews at the final 500 meter mark and witness this historic win for the program.
This year the Bruins not only repeated last year's V4+ win to defend the Condon Johnson Cup but also edged out OCC by 3 seconds in the 2V8 and by 5 seconds in a crowded Varsity 8 field to clinch the Robert B. Moore and James. C Jorgensen Cups for the first time since 2004 and 2007 respectively. That means three trophies are returning to the boathouse to be engraved.
The Novice 4+ finished 5th at less than a second behind LMU, while the Novice 8+ battled out with OCC almost a full minute ahead of third-placed UCSB whom our crews scrimmaged against last week on Lake Cachuma. Our second Varsity 4+ finished third, yet was unfortunately not qualified for any points under this regatta's bylaws being a "B" entry. This technicality resulted in OCC being awarded the points trophy for putting an entry in the second Novice 8+ category in which they were the only boat.
The Bruins are ecstatic to have had such a successful outing amidst finals week back in Westwood, and look forward to returning to the water in a few days for their spring break training camp leading up to the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday, April 1st. UCLA has entered five eights - a 1V, 2V, Ltwt 8+, 1N and 2N - attesting to the depth of the program post-COVID and head coach Marcel Stiffey's winning vision to dominate WIRA regionals and bring home multiple national titles from this year's ACRA championships in two months.
Special thanks goes out to Novce Coach Paul Wilkins for getting our trailer, boats and equipment safety to and from Newport, coaches Marcel Stiffey and Weston Cole for their on-and-off the water support, the Petokas and Martin families for ensuring the boys had fresh fruit (and coffee) when they got off the water, Alumni Charlie Hughes for his continuously generous support especially in the form of sandwiches and all of our other parents, alumni, and supporters for their cheer and support of our athletes - especially those who took pictures from the launch.
