Bruins win P.A Palmer Overall Points Trophy at 57th Annual Newport Regatta

Article by UCLA Rowing Alumni Charlie Hughes '83

UCLA Men's Rowing won the P. A. Palmer team award and displayed the program's depth at the 57th Newport Regatta. The Bruin Crew won or finished second in the five events contested to earn the trophy last hoisted by UCLA in 1986.

The Novice 4 set the tone in the first race of the day with a solid win over UCI, OCC, and the rest of the field. The Bruins found themselves down a boat length to UCI at 1000 meters after the Anteaters' torrid start. They remained steady and were able to catch UCI, while understroking them, with 500 meters to go. Displaying the poise of a veteran crew, the UCLA Novice 4 rowed through UCI in the final 500 meters with a well-timed sprint to win the Frank Marscellas Cup by a boat length.
Novice 4+ Lineup: Cox. Ally Martin, Bow. Joshua Binder, 2. Brian Chen, 3. Richard Wolff, Stroke. Willem Walden

The Second Novice 8 spotted the quick starting OCC crew a boat length lead early and stalked them for the first 1000 meters. They too were understroking the lead boat in the third 500 but were unable to mount a charge. The Second Novice 8 made OCC earn their victory and the Pirates will be wary of the Bruins next time they line up.
2nd Novice 8+ Lineup: Bow. Mateen Rabbani, 2. Evan Zhong, 3. Viktor Petokas, 4. Joseph Herro, 5. Jack Slavin, 6. Paul Schumacher, 7. Tyler Peterson, Stroke. Zachary Cowger, Cox. Cecilia Smith

The Novice 8 had seven entries but OCC and UCLA were the class of the field. The wind created a challenging 10-minute effort to line up for the start. When the red flag finally dropped OCC took a quick 8 seat lead but could not shake the determined Bruins. At 1000 meters UCLA started chipping away at the deficit. The Novice 8 were walking on OCC as the finish line approached but fell just short by 4 seats.
Novice 8+ Lineup: Bow. Andrew Condrin, 2. Ian Kenneally, 3. Jack Miller, 4. Marcus Zanzonico, 5. John Morken, 6. Christopher Dolak, 7. Gino Haase, Stroke. Aiden Ament, Cox. Rhianna Carlsson

The Varsity 4 had two UCLA entries consisting of the 2V crew that did not have an event at the regatta. The four-boat field was tightly packed through 500 meters when the UCLA "B" boat gained a slight two-seat lead. ASU made a move as the crews approached 1000 meters and was able to hold the lead as the race reached 500 meters to go. The  UCLA "B" boat never wavered and countered with a decisive move that resulted in an open water victory over the defenders of the Condon Johnson Cup.

UCLA "B" Varsity 4+ Lineup: Cox. Joshua Binder, Bow. Quinlan Parker, 2. Erik Hsu-Storaker, 3. Kobi Talma, Stroke. Willem Walden

The Varsity 8 race was a six-boat race that came down to another duel featuring UCLA. In this version, the Bruins left the field behind and battled with the Anteaters. UCI held a slight lead off the start and held a four-seat advantage at 1000 meters when UCLA made a move and closed the gap to one seat at 1500 meters. UCI countered with an impressive sprint in the last 250 meters to claim the Jim C. Jorgensen Cup.
