Four UCLA swimmers won individual events Saturday as the Bruins hit the pool at UC San Diego's Winter Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
As a team, UCLA finished third overall, competing against Grand Canyon University, Arizona State, USC, University of San Diego, UC Irvine and the host Tritons.
Eric Lau snagged the top times in the men's 100 butterfly (53.65) and 50 backstroke (25.42). The third-year psychology major from Elk Grove finished the event with a team-high 72 points following a second-place finish in the 50 butterfly (23.89) and fourth-place effort in the 100 I.M. (56.07).
Club President Helen Senchev raced home first in the women's 100 backstroke (1:06.39), earning the Castro Valley native a Nationals cut. Swimming in her first meet of the season, freshman Carly Marshall won the women's 50 breaststroke (32.87), while Temecula Swim Club product Brianna Martilla topped the field in the 200 freestyle (2:04.07) and was third in the 100.
Other Bruins supplying top swims included former Manhattan Beach Dolphins standout Katie Stone, who placed second in both the women's 200 I.M. and 50 backstroke. Menlo-Atherton High alum Amanda Younes splashed home second in the 200 breaststroke, Uma Kumar was third in the 100 backstroke and Keianna Pineda touched second in the 100 freestyle.
Massachusetts transplant Pam Nelson finished third in the women's 200 I.M., Elena Dworak and Marisa Duran were second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke and Marshall placed second in the 100 I.M.
Several Bruins also tied in the women's 50 freestyle, with Cora Chun and Duran each pumping out sprints of 28.57, while Olivia Carvallo and Younes clocked-in at 29.12. Carvallo also tied Emi Chinn in the 50 backstroke (33.30).
The Bruin Swim Club will return to action in Westwood on Saturday March 5, when UCLA hosts its Winter Invitational at Spieker Aquatic Center.
