The UCLA Men's Rugby took second place in the PAC Rugby 7's tournament this past weekend in San Francisco. Held at the Cal Berkeley Witter Rugby Field, the tournament hosted 8 of the premier teams in the PAC-12, pitting them against one another in 4 team pool play the opening day.
The Bruins played exceptionally and made it to the finals, ultimately coming up short to against the Cal Golden Bears.
DAY 1:
UCLA took no prisoners, taking decisive wins over their first two opponents; beating
Stanford and Oregon State, 27-0 and 46-7.
Even with limited rest between matches, the Bruins were able to keep their momentum rolling and channeled that energy into a
17-12 victory over rugby powerhouse, University of Arizona, who had beaten them in the tournament previously.
DAY 2:Â
After some much-needed rest, UCLA matched up against the
University of Oregon, taking a 24-12 win.
The Bruins then advanced to the finals, pitting them against forever-rival, Cal Berkeley. The two battled each other all game, but the
Golden Bears pulled away in the second half of the match, ultimately winning 10-0.
Junior center,
Lucas Lacamp, played exceptionally over the weekend, leading the Bruins with 8 tries. Seniors
Shane Barry and
Josh Dowdeswell also played solidly, providing veteran leadership and savvy to their fellow Bruins.
"We really showed our strength as a team" Lacamp said. "Our team morale is really good. We all fought for each other."
Lacamp continued, "Even against big varsity programs, we showed UCLA Rugby is still strong."
