UCLA Intramural Field to Undergo Construction for Complete Field Renewal

Following a flood due to a Los Angeles water main bursting in August 2020, the UCLA Intramural Field has been approved for construction to replace the damaged field surface with a completely new one.

Commonly known as the IM Field, this space is the home for numerous UCLA Intramural Sports league games and the majority of UCLA Club Sports home events. The field uses synthetic grass turf with a reinforced rubberized foundation to provide a versatile field for nearly all sports and activities.

The IM Field sports stitched field lines for durability and has permanent football, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, and softball fields for play. It also offers a large designated perimeter for jogging, stretching, and ploymetric training.

Regarding the damage sustained to the field in 2020: a 30-inch main line burst at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Stone Canyon Road, causing a large flow of water into Westwood Plaza, Parking Lot 4, and the IM Field. This caused water to seep underneath and uproot the IM Field turf and foundation, causing irreversible warping and damage to the surface. Multiple areas are unstable from large impressions on the field, causing an uneven surface unsuitable for athletic activity.

Field construction crews were approved to work double time in order to accelerate the process to use the IM Field once more, as it is used for thousands of UCLA Club Sports events, thousands of UCLA IM Sports games, and dozens of large-scale campus events yearly.

It's anticipated completion date range is roughly estimated at mid-February.
