UCLA Women's Lacrosse finished off regular season play, full of ups and downs, with a HUGE win at the Western Women's Lacrosse League (WWLL) Championships, held in Morgan Hill, CA on April 13-14. Holding the 2nd seed going into the tournament, the Bruins had a bye for the first round. In the semifinals, they met an aggressive Santa Clara team, looking for revenge after losing to the Bruins earlier in the regular season. The Bruins won 14-7, securing their spot in the Championship game against the SDSU Aztecs, who were previously undefeated, winning most games by a significant margin and beating UCLA by 2 in the regular season.
In a nail biting game with multiple lead changes, the Bruins pulled out a one goal 10-9 win against the Aztecs, winning the WWLL Championship title! Four UCLA players (Karina Yamasaki, Kendall Fitzgerald, Emma Shahabi, and Sophie Kamanski) were recognized as first team All-League players at the tournament.
Following the huge league win, the Women's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (WCLA) announced national rankings for the Women's Lacrosse National Tournament, which will be held May 8-11 in Virginia Beach, VA, and placed UCLA as the 3rd ranked team in the country, behind Pitt (15-0) and BYU (12-1). The team will be headed to Virginia Beach in just over a week. We are wish our brulaxers luck as they return to Nationals for the 7th consecutive year.
