This past weekend (April 13-14), six team members traveled to the Pacific Northwest to compete in the annual Rainier Cup, hosted by the University of Washington. The regatta took place at the Columbia Gorge Sailing Center in Northern Oregon. Other teams competing from the PCC were UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz.
Conditions on both days were relatively new territory for those of us who had never sailed much on rivers before. There was a lot of current, with wind on Saturday blowing about 10-12 knots and gusting up to 20. The wind died down, however, relatively early in the day around 2 o' clock. On Sunday, the wind was lighter overall but there was still a lot of current.
Overall, both divisions combined sailed 12 races (6 each). UCLA placed 6th out of 11 total boats competing. Congratulations to Abe Dearden, Bleiz Larzul, and Marianne Simpson for their bullets this weekend! And thank you to the Northwest Conference and University of Washington for being so welcoming and hosting such a fun regatta.
