UCLA Mens Hockey - New Season Brings High Expectations

Expectations are running high for the Men's Ice Hockey team this season after a successful 2016-17 campaign. Last season, the Bruins beat USC in the Crosstown Cup three games to one, in a best of 5-game series. A feat accomplished for the first time in five years!

The Bruins also won the Los Angeles Kings College Cup, a tournament hosted by none other than the Los Angeles Kings, holding the first round and the Final at Staples Center. The tournament hosts universities based in the greater Los Angeles area, Cal State University Long Beach, Los Angeles, Fullerton, Northridge, Loyola Marymount University, University of Southern California, and Chapman College.

Continuing on their victorious conquest, the Bruins won the PAC 8 Conference in Overtime – sending them to Regionals, a first time feat in UCLA Hockey history!

UCLA opened up this season with two non-conference games against a tough San Diego State University squad- the same team that knocked out the Bruins in Regionals. The Bruins lost the first game 5-3 with the 5th goal scored on an open net and lost the second game 10-2. Don't let the sluggish start fool you though, due to the quarter system, UCLA has a late start with little to no time to practice while all other schools have been practicing since August.

The following weekend after the SDSU losses, the Bruins bounced back in Los Angeles beating Oregon 8-2 in the first game and 4-3 in overtime in the second game. The Bruins then played two non-conference games the following weekend, beating both LMU, 7-3 and San Jose State, 3-2.
