Year in Review: Softball

UCLA's Softball Club finished their season with a record of 11 wins and 7 losses, landing themselves in the top half of their 7-team Southern Pacific Conference.

To save time and money, the club generally plays in a series of 3 games straight in one day against each team. With a small roster of 13, the team had to build up incredible endurance to play for so long with no extra players. They notably came back in a match up against USC, having lost the first game with 2 more to go. The Bruins have mastered the art of keeping up their energy even with an early disappointment.

At the conclusion of the season, the team came extremely close to qualifying for Nationals. To qualify, the Bruins needed to win 2 games against Fullerton, and were unfortunately only able to pull out 1. As the team is still in its developing years, this only being its second active year after a year-long hiatus, the players have high hopes for a better outcome next year.

Co-presidents and fourth years, Karina Arias and Laura Levya took things into their own hands to have the club reinstated in 2014. Of reviving the club, Arias said, "I think we ran into two huge obstacles. One is that we did not have guidance from previous presidents to teach us how it is done. The second was not having enough girls to feel comfortable and know we would always have a team. Overall we got it done. I am glad that we were co-presidents and could help each other out."

With only 13 members, limited field space, and no coach, the team often found it difficult to practice. Generally using the IM field, the players needed to be mindful of other students using the facility and become comfortable with playing on grass abnormally short for softball. However, the team remained positive and allowed their obstacles to make them stronger. Third year, Becky Hval said that not having a coach allowed the team members to improvise and bond with each other.

The young team will only graduate 2 seniors, the co-presidents of the club, who second year and future president, Florence Lee says were the pillars of the team. Lee elaborates, "They've been on the team in the two years I've been on the team so the thought of them leaving and not playing with them next year is really sad."

Arias says of the upcoming year, "I hope that [the returning players] continue on recruiting and doing as much possible to keep it running, It was hard for us to maintain it. We were both new to being presidents and had to learn without prior guidance, but I loved this team!"

Congratulations on your season, Bruins!
