Year in Review: Fencing

Saber, Foil, and Epee are the three fundamental weapons of Fencing. The world-renowned sport is highly competitive and brings a unique aspect of athleticism to the table. "It isn't simply a game with swords, it's an intellectual puzzle, 'a physical chess game' if you may.'"

UCLA's Club Fencing is a student run club that teaches students the art of sparing. Each weapon is assigned a gender and comprises a squad of three people. The squads then compete against their opponents in the hopes of getting the gold.

Looking back on the year, vice- president Casey Lee commented on the Bruins' performance this 2015-2016 competitive season. "This year we've had a number of successes for individuals and squads. Our team's overall results for the IFCSC (Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California) were determined based on the cumulative results over four intercollegiate tournaments."

UCLA's Club Fencing's record of success is due to the hard work and continuous effort of its teammates. Newcomer Jung Hoon Kim explicitly conveyed his passion for the sport by being consistently dedication and eager to attend every practice and provide support and encouragement for his squad and teammates. Jung's perseverance not only helped improve his skills but also inspired many players to push themselves to perform at the best of their ability.

Fencing is a unique sport that requires a specific skill set. Mastering the art form requires patience, confidence, and persistence. Josef Berthoud, current senior and former vice-president, and I spoke about his history on the team. Berthoud mentioned that before college he hadn't known that there was a difference amongst the weapons used in Fencing. However today, Berthoud competes in tournaments as captain of the Epee Squad.

Going into next year, the teams' goal is to compete in the National Intercollegiate Fencing Conference. Achieving this goal will mark a record in the clubs' history; being the first time the Bruins have ever attended Nationals. With the growth, training, and increasing potential of the team they have a sure chance to reach their objective.

Congratulations on a great year Bruins!
See you in the fall!
