Figure Skating is heading to Nationals this weekend in Adrian College, Michigan. After a successful season, the team is confident in their ability to medal in this year's event. As a new club, having begun only in 2012, being able to attend Nationals twice is a huge accomplishment itself.Â
During the three Pacific Coast Qualifying Sectional Competitions, the team solidly gained 9 points, placing them 3rd overall in the Pacific Coast Section. Placing in 3rd place qualified the UCLA team for the US Intercollegiate National Championships. UCLA will send 12 skaters this weekend, a large increase from the 7 skaters they sent last year.
The two other schools that qualified with UCLA from their section include the University of Denver and UC Berkeley. The following schools from varying sections across the country also qualified: Adrian College, University of Michigan, Miami University, Boston University, University of Delaware and Dartmouth College.Â
The team's biggest competition they feel will come from the Eastern Section; Boston, Delaware and Dartmouth. Boston won Nationals last year with UCLA placing solidly in 5th place. With more skaters in competition this year, the team has strong hopes of placing in at least 5th place in their second year of attendance.
Two individuals competing for the team are graduating seniors, Maddison Bullock and Amanda Sunyoto, of whom this Nationals will be their last competition with the team. We wish Maddison, Amanda and the whole of the UCLA Figure Skating the best of luck in Michigan, and will report on their results as they come in. Go Bruins!
